About St George's Church, Shimpling
St George’s Church, Shimpling, is a former Anglican church near Diss in Norfolk. Dating from around 1150, it is protected at Grade I and is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. The church ceased regular use in 1987 and occupies a secluded position south of Shimpling village.
Built chiefly of flint with stone details and tiled roofing, the church comprises a nave, chancel, north porch and western tower. The nave and circular base of the tower are 12th-century, while the octagonal upper stage and chancel were added in the 13th century. A Victorian restoration by E. C. Lee included a replacement porch and small leaded spire. Inside are 15th-century carved benches, remnants of a screen and an octagonal font decorated with evangelists, angels and lions. Surviving medieval glass and three historic bells are also preserved.
