About St Margaret's Church
St Margaret's Church serves the Church of England parish of Lyng in Norfolk and is protected at Grade II*. A second place of worship once stood in the parish, but St Edmund’s Chapel is now ruinous.
Built during the Middle Ages, the church combines knapped flint, brick and carefully cut stone. The tower at the western end belongs to the 13th century, while the broad nave and southern entrance porch date largely from the 1400s. Tall windows light the nave beneath its timber hammerbeam roof. The porch later gained a Dutch-influenced gable during the 18th century, with a pediment and toothed cornice. Reconstruction of the chancel followed in 1912. Interior features include an eight-sided font from the early 1200s, decorated late-medieval doors, an eastern window portraying St Margaret, and a 15th-century altar textile fashioned from reused vestment pieces. Excavations undertaken in 2012 revealed the base of a medieval buttress and what may have been an underground chamber beyond the tower.
