About St Edmund's Chapel

St Edmund's Chapel stands in farmland east of Lyng, Norfolk. Now a fragmentary ruin, it is protected as a Grade II listed building. Vegetation largely conceals the surviving masonry, including part of an arch that may once have formed the northern entrance. Lyng’s other historic place of worship is St Margaret’s Church.

The chapel belonged to a Benedictine community of nuns and has traditional associations with the ninth-century conflict in which Edmund the Martyr died, although the building itself is later. The community moved to Thetford in 1176, but worship continued here beyond 1250. The nuns retained property and farmland at Lyng, using the revenue to provide a chaplain. Records from the 1370s connect seven reported miracles with the site. The remaining brickwork is thought to date from the fifteenth century, and the chapel may have served Lyng Eastaugh until the Reformation. It had fallen into ruin by 1730.
