About St Mary Magdalene Church, Sandringham
St Mary Magdalene Church, Sandringham is an active Church of England parish church near Sandringham House in King’s Lynn, Norfolk. Dedicated to Mary Magdalene, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building. The royal family has worshipped here since Queen Victoria’s reign and continues to attend services while staying at Sandringham, particularly during Christmas.
The present church originated in the 1500s and is a small Perpendicular-style building constructed from local carrstone. Samuel Sanders Teulon restored it in 1855, followed by further work under Sir Arthur Blomfield in 1890. Charles Eamer Kempe designed much of the decoration and the east window glass. Notable furnishings include detailed Norwegian woodwork, a silver altar, reredos and pulpit, a seventeenth-century Spanish processional cross, a Florentine marble font and a Greek font from the ninth century.
