About Church of St Mary, Snettisham
The Church of St Mary, Snettisham is the Church of England parish church serving Snettisham, near King’s Lynn in Norfolk. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it remains a place of parish worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Dating largely from the later 14th century, the church is an important example of Decorated Gothic architecture. Flint walls are complemented by stone detailing, while a stone spire rises about 53 metres above the crossing tower and once helped sailors navigate The Wash. The original cross-shaped plan was altered before 1600 when the chancel was removed and the northern transept shortened. Frederick Preedy carried out restoration work in 1856. Surviving features include a painted pulpit and font from the 15th century, an organ built by Alfred Kirkland in 1885, and six bells, three of which were recast in 1958. The east window, replaced in 1920 after wartime bomb damage, portrays the Crucifixion.
