About Saint John the Baptist Church

Saint John the Baptist Church is a Church of England place of worship on Broad Street in Harleston, Norfolk. It belongs to the parish of Redenhall with Harleston and forms part of a seven-church benefice serving communities around the Waveney Valley. The building is protected at Grade II. Following an accidental fire in October 2025, it sustained serious damage inside and entered a substantial programme of repair and conservation.

Designed by R. M. Phipson and completed in 1872, the church was created as a chapel of ease for Harleston. Its Gothic design uses flint masonry with stone detailing and includes a sharply pitched slate roof, clerestoried nave, side aisles, transepts and a chancel ending in a many-sided apse. A stone bellcote rises above the southern transept, while the west front has an elaborate window and arched entrance. Much of the stained glass was commissioned from the O’Connor family workshop. The original glazing in the western window was conserved in 2010 and was removed for specialist restoration after the fire.
