About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Church of England parish church in Harleston, Norfolk. It serves as the principal church of the extensive parish encompassing Redenhall, Harleston and Wortwell. The church remains in parish use and is protected as a Grade I listed building. St John the Baptist in Harleston was originally established as its chapel of ease.
Christian worship has taken place on the site for at least a millennium. During heating works in 1858, traces of an earlier church with a round tower, probably dating from the Saxon or Norman period, were found beneath the nave and near the chancel. The present chancel originates from the early 14th century and may initially have extended an older building. The nave and aisles were renewed during the extensive works of the 15th and 16th centuries. Construction of the prominent tower began around 1460 and continued with support from bequests recorded between 1469 and 1514. Its pinnacles rise to approximately 32 metres.
