About St Andrew's Church, Gunton
St Andrew’s Church, Gunton stands among trees near Gunton Hall in Hanworth, Norfolk. Formerly used for Anglican worship, it is now redundant and maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. Its architectural and historic importance is recognised through listing at Grade I.
Completed in 1769, the church was commissioned by Sir William Harbord as a replacement for a medieval predecessor. Robert Adam produced the design, his sole Norfolk work and the only English church wholly attributed to him. Pale gault brick, rendered areas and stone detailing form a Neo-Palladian, temple-like exterior, fronted by a stepped Doric portico. Within, the stone floor has dark diamond inserts, while elaborate plasterwork and a decorated oval ceiling panel enrich the space. An oak screen behind the altar incorporates Corinthian columns with gold-coloured capitals and a religious painting. Further features include enclosed pews, memorial hatchments and a two-manual gallery organ.
