About Church of St Peter

The Church of St Peter is a Church of England parish church in Dereham, Norfolk. It belongs to the Mattishall and Tudd Valley benefice within the Diocese of Norwich and remains in parish use. Recognised for its particular architectural and historic importance, the building is listed at Grade I.

Its oldest fabric is a layer of local carstone around the foot of the circular tower, thought to be older than the Norman Conquest. Most of the tower was constructed around the end of the 11th century or beginning of the 12th, while its upper stage was added in the 1300s. The nave, south aisle and chancel largely date from the 14th and 15th centuries, as does the south porch. Inside are a four-arched medieval arcade, a richly carved octagonal font and two piscinas. Restoration took place during the 1800s, when the stained glass was installed. Carvings of animals and birds decorate the pew ends along the southern aisle.
