About St Margaret's, Cley
St Margaret’s, Cley serves as the Church of England parish church for Cley next the Sea in Norfolk. It is dedicated to Margaret of Antioch and falls within the Norwich diocese. Recognised for its outstanding architectural value, the building is protected at Grade I.
Much of the present structure dates from work undertaken between the 1320s and around 1345. Predominantly Perpendicular in character, it also incorporates Decorated Gothic details and a chancel in the Early English tradition. A broad porch was built on the southern side later that century, although the two transepts have since fallen into ruin. Notable furnishings include an eight-sided font, timber seating with sculpted ends, elaborate tracery and a richly worked screen beneath the former rood. The church also contains many memorials to those lost in war. After a rare white-crowned sparrow appeared locally in 2008, birdwatchers raised over £6,000 for repairs, and the bird was later portrayed in a window.
