About St Michael the Archangel's Church, Booton
St Michael the Archangel’s Church, Booton, is a redundant Anglican church standing around a mile east of the Norfolk village. Sometimes called the Cathedral of the Fields, it is a Grade II* listed building and is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
The church was constructed during the late nineteenth century on the site of an earlier building. Its rector, the Revd Whitwell Elwin, designed both the structure and its furnishings despite having no formal architectural training. Grey knapped flint, limestone details and tiled roofs frame an unusual French Gothic design, with two slender towers placed diagonally at the west end. Inside, the nave has linenfold panelling and a hammerbeam roof adorned with wooden angels carved by local craftsman James Minns. The stained glass features angels, musicians and women’s faces. A damaged fourteenth-century sculpture of the Virgin and Child, uncovered during rebuilding, is set within the north porch.
