About St Theodore's Church
St Theodore’s Church is an active Church in Wales parish church in Port Talbot, within the Diocese of Llandaff. It stands beside Talbot Memorial Park, facing Maes-y-Cwrt Terrace across the A48. Designed by John Loughborough Pearson, it is his largest Welsh church and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Emily Charlotte Talbot of nearby Margam Castle helped finance its construction as a memorial to her brother, Theodore Mansel Talbot, who died in 1876. The church replaced the smaller Holy Cross Church and was consecrated in August 1897. Its design is chiefly Early English, with Bath stone used for much of the building and Portland stone for the pulpit. Notable features include stained glass by Clayton and Bell, a monument to Victoria Cross recipient Rupert Price Hallowes, and Charles Martin’s final and largest organ. Extensive restoration in 2000 included cleaning the stonework, replacing pollution-damaged glass, repairing the railings and bellcote, rehanging the Sanctus bell, and restoring the organ.
