About Roman Catholic Church of The Incarnation, Tombae
The Roman Catholic Church of The Incarnation, Tombae, stands at Tomintoul in Moray. No longer an active place of worship, it closed in 2012 following concerns about its structure and loose roof slates. It has held Category A listed status since 1987 and, by 2019, was recorded as being in poor condition and at moderate risk.
Built with support from the Gordon family, the church was begun by John Gall in 1827 and opened in February 1829 while still incomplete. Bishop James Kyle and the priest-architect Walter Lovi completed and altered it in 1843–44. Its Gothic Revival design includes a dressed pink granite west front, pointed windows with intersecting tracery, and crosses on both gables. Inside, ribbed vaulting rests upon cast-iron columns clad in timber. A Conacher organ formerly occupied the west gallery, but was later removed and installed at a school chapel in Lebanon. The churchyard contains the family burial vault of Glenlivet distillery founder George Smith.
