About St Rufus Church, Keith
St Rufus Church, Keith is an active Church of Scotland parish church in Buckie, Moray. Also known as Keith Parish Church, it remains a place of worship and is protected as a Category A listed building.
Construction began in 1816 and was completed in 1819, replacing an earlier medieval church dedicated to the same saint. James Gillespie Graham designed the building in the Perpendicular Gothic style, with battlemented walls, decorative window tracery and a prominent four-stage western tower containing bells and clocks. Later work included alterations during the 1850s and 1870s, repairs to the east gable in the 1880s and probable refurbishment around the turn of the twentieth century. A Nicholson organ was installed in 1890. Inside, the doorway between the lobby and nave forms a distinctive memorial naming local people who died in both world wars. The medieval church’s sacrament house was also preserved within the newer building.
