About St Peter's Roman Catholic Church, St Andrew's Square, Buckie
St Peter’s Roman Catholic Church stands in St Andrew’s Square, Buckie, Moray. This substantial nineteenth-century Catholic parish church, often called Buckie Cathedral by local people, remains open for worship within the Diocese of Aberdeen. It received Category A listed status in 1972.
Construction began in 1851 and concluded in 1857, following plans by Bishop James Kyle with support from Elgin architects A & W Reid. Sir William Gordon provided the site. Its Gothic design includes a commanding western façade with two square towers, a recessed pointed doorway and a traceried stained-glass window. Charles Ménart enlarged and refurbished the building in 1906–07, adding the eastern chancel, porches, baptistry and marble fittings while retaining the original rose window. Inside are an arcaded nave, Stations of the Cross, an ornate First World War memorial and a pipe organ made in 1875 for Fort Augustus Abbey, installed here in 2000–01.
