About St Mary's Collegiate Church, Cullen
St Mary's Collegiate Church, Cullen, in Buckie, Moray, serves the Church of Scotland parish of Cullen and Deskford. Formerly Roman Catholic, it became Presbyterian following the Scottish Reformation and remains in use for worship. Recognised for its late Scottish Gothic character, the church received Category A listed status in 1972.
Records show that the medieval chapel became a parish church in 1236 and gained collegiate rank in 1543. Later centuries brought several additions and restorations. Built of rubble with dressed sandstone and granite details, the cruciform structure has tall lancets, traceried windows and an eighteenth-century bellcote. Inside are nineteenth-century timber pews, a large two-level gallery known as the Seafield Loft, and an intricately carved sacrament house. The church and graveyard contain memorials associated with the Ogilvy family. Queen Elizabeth de Burgh’s internal organs were buried here in 1327, after which Robert the Bruce endowed a chaplain to pray for her.
