About St Gregory's Church, Preshome
St Gregory’s Church, Preshome, is a Roman Catholic place of worship in the Buckie area of Moray, Scotland. Its national architectural and historical significance is reflected in its Category A designation.
The church dates to 1788 and was Scotland’s earliest purpose-built Catholic church to be erected publicly following the Reformation of 1560. Earlier Catholic services had taken place discreetly in houses or buildings concealed behind domestic exteriors. Its Italian Baroque front was conceived as a confident expression of Catholic identity and remains highly unusual in Scotland. Classical urns crown the gable, which also carries the inscription “DEO 1788”. The original scheme is attributed to Father John Reid, with subsequent work undertaken by Peter Paul Pugin. Within the sanctuary, the reredos includes Caracci’s depiction of St Gregory, donated by the Earl of Findlater.
