About Old Parish Church of St Talorgan and walled burial ground
The Old Parish Church of St Talorgan and walled burial ground is a medieval ruin in Buckie, Moray. It ceased serving as a place of parish worship after its closure in 1804. The remains and surrounding graveyard are protected as a scheduled monument, having once held Category A listing.
Originating in the thirteenth century, the church honours St Talorgan, or Talarican, and became associated with Aberdeen’s cathedral chapter during 1351. A replacement church prompted the removal of most of the building, though the west tower and chancel endured. Its fabric combines rough masonry with finely finished stonework. Within the chancel are sixteenth-century family burial compartments and covered memorials to the Ogilvies of Findlater. The tower was raised over an older porch, and its upper chamber formerly accommodated both prisoners and kirk-session meetings. Its bell housing dates from 1661. Coping finishes the stone boundary around the graveyard, which is approached through iron gates between capped, square pillars.
