About Deskford Church

Deskford Church is a roofless historic church in Buckie, Moray, set within an old burial ground. It is no longer used for parish worship and, together with the surviving part of the adjoining Deskford Tower, is protected as a scheduled monument.

Records note rebuilding work in 1541, when the building was described as a chapel probably associated with the Ogilvy family. It was called a church by 1545, and an elaborately carved sacrament house was installed in 1551. The long rectangular structure measures about 20 metres by 8 metres, with walls roughly one metre thick. After a replacement parish church opened in 1872, its roof was taken off and the masonry was reinforced with cement. The tower has been reduced to its vaulted lowest storey. Memorials from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries remain in the surrounding burial ground.
