About St Andrew
St Andrew in Tredunnock, Monmouthshire, is a Church of England parish church that remains in active use. The building is protected at Grade II* for its special architectural and historic interest.
Its beginnings probably lie in the twelfth or thirteenth century, with two chancel lancets possibly surviving from the Norman period. Although the church is first documented in the mid-thirteenth century, much of the present fabric, including the porch, was built during the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Constructed from Old Red Sandstone, it is chiefly Perpendicular in style. The font and upper section of the tower date to the seventeenth century. Arthur Grove directed a substantial restoration in the early twentieth century, commemorated by a Portland stone tablet carved by Eric Gill in 1910. Inside is a well-preserved Roman memorial stone to Julius Julianus, a soldier of the Second Augustan Legion stationed at Caerleon.
