About St Mary

St Mary serves the Church in Wales parish at Rogiet, a small countryside village on the Caldicot Levels in Monmouthshire, approximately eight miles from Chepstow. Protected at Grade II*, it joined the Caldicot Rectorial Benefice in 2001 alongside the churches in Caldicot and Portskewett.

The building is medieval, originating in the 1200s and perhaps incorporating earlier work. Major additions were made during the following century, when the tower was constructed, while renovation and partial rebuilding occurred around the end of the 1800s and beginning of the 1900s. Its architecture follows the Decorated phase of Gothic design. Triassic stone forms the detailing around its windows and across the tower. A compact nave and lower chancel sit beneath the prominent tower, whose external stair turret is crowned by an unusual eight-sided top. The interior includes stained glass of particular interest. Its first dedication was to St Hilary, possibly meaning either St Eleri or Hilary of Arles.
