About St Andrew
St Andrew stands on Meols Drive in West Kirby, Merseyside. It remains in use as a Church of England parish within Chester Diocese and the Wirral North deanery. Its worship follows the Traditional Catholic tradition, with pastoral oversight provided by the Bishop of Beverley. The building has Grade II listed protection.
Work began in 1889 under John Douglas and Daniel Fordham, and Douglas later completed the structure with Charles Minshull in 1909. Initially serving as an additional chapel for St Bridget’s, it gained parish status in 1920. Sandstone walls, dressed stone details and slate roofing form a cruciform building with aisles, transepts and a raised nave clerestory. A tower placed at an angle over the crossing carries a slate-clad spire and four pinnacles. Notable furnishings include an eight-sided font, Geoffrey Webb’s coloured and gilded 1911 altarpiece, and Arthur Barbosa’s 1928 designs for the organ case and pew fronts. Stained-glass windows include pieces by Herbert Bryans and Septimus Waugh.
