Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral stands on Mount Pleasant in Liverpool, Merseyside. Formally dedicated to Christ the King, it is the Roman Catholic cathedral for the Archdiocese of Liverpool and houses the archbishop’s seat. The cathedral is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Frederick Gibberd designed the present circular cathedral after winning an international competition. Work began in October 1962, and the completed building was consecrated in May 1967. Its central altar was planned to give the congregation a clear view during Mass, while the design incorporated the crypt built for Edwin Lutyens’s earlier, more ambitious scheme. Concrete ribs support the structure, with mosaic tiling and an aluminium-covered roof among its materials. Earlier cathedral proposals by Edward Welby Pugin, Lutyens and Adrian Gilbert Scott were either left incomplete or abandoned because of changing priorities, wartime restrictions and cost.
