About St. Francis Xavier Church
St. Francis Xavier Church is a Roman Catholic church on Salisbury Street in Everton, Liverpool. This Grade II* listed building remains an active parish within the Archdiocese of Liverpool and Liverpool North Pastoral Area. Jesuits served the parish from its beginnings until Easter 2023.
The church originated amid Liverpool’s growing Catholic population in the 1840s. Its foundation stone was placed in 1842, and the building, designed by Joseph John Scoles, opened in December 1848. A spire followed in 1883. Edmund Kirby designed the Sodality Chapel, built in 1887 and opened the following year; it was later joined to the main interior by removing the intervening wall. Constructed from stone and roofed in Welsh slate, the church has an aisled nave, short chancel, side chapels and a southwest tower. Its notable contents include Victorian sculpture, historic vestments and work by Conrad Dressler. After wartime damage and later decline, the roof was renewed in 2000, followed by rewiring, new heating and restored exterior stonework.
