About St Anthony's Church

St Anthony’s Church is a Roman Catholic church on Scotland Road in the Vauxhall district of Liverpool, Merseyside. Built in 1833, it remains a place of worship and is protected as a Grade II listed building.

Its origins lie in a French chapel established nearby in 1804 by Jean Baptiste Antoine Gerardot, who had left France following the Revolution. Growth in the congregation led to the construction of the present, larger church, designed by John Broadbent. Its restrained design incorporates lancet windows and buttresses influenced by the Early English Gothic style, while the interior is notably spacious. A fire in April 2008, apparently caused by a tall candle left alight overnight, required substantial restoration. The church reopened for Mass that July.
