About St Anne's
St Anne’s stands on Overbury Street in Liverpool’s Edge Hill district. It remains in use as a Roman Catholic parish within the Liverpool Archdiocese. Its parish joined with St Bernard’s parish in 1999, and the building has Grade II protection.
Designed by Charles Hansom, the church was erected for Downside Abbey’s monks from 1843 to 1846. Its red sandstone walls, slate covering and Gothic design include aisles, transepts, a rounded chancel end and a substantial tower at the west. A proposed spire was omitted owing to fears about unstable ground. During 1888 and 1889, Pugin and Pugin expanded the structure with new transepts and an extended eastern end. Peter Paul Pugin created the baptistry in 1893. Notable interior details include quatrefoil-shaped piers, slender arched windows in the apse and a three-manual organ, updated by Henry Willis and Sons in 1958. The burial ground contains a Grade II protected Linford family monument.
