The building is designated Grade I, recognising its exceptional architectural and historic importance.
Dating partly to the 14th century and recorded as built in 1350, the church is notable for its large scale and early Perpendicular Gothic design. Its commemorative windows include references to John Smith, a founder of the Jamestown settlement in Virginia, who was baptised at the church. The churchyard also contains two war graves maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
