About St Mary Magdalene Church, Gedney
St Mary Magdalene Church, Gedney is a Church of England parish church near Spalding in Lincolnshire. Dedicated to Mary Magdalene, it remains the local parish church and has Grade I protection. Its considerable scale within the level Fenland landscape has led to the informal title “Cathedral of the Fens”.
The building originated during the thirteenth century, with further work continuing as late as the seventeenth. A major restoration took place in 1890, when the southern aisle was rebuilt. The tower rises 86 feet to the parapet and combines Early English lower sections with Perpendicular work above; its incomplete spire survives only as a stump. Decorated Gothic features appear in the chancel and nave arcades. Among the interior details are remnants of a fourteenth-century Jesse window, a late medieval brass depicting a woman accompanied by a puppy, and a damaged thirteenth-century knight’s effigy. Alabaster memorials dated 1605 commemorate Adlard and Cassandra Welby with their five children.
