About St Peter's Church, Walpole St Peter
St Peter’s Church, Walpole St Peter, stands in Walpole, Lincolnshire, and remains in use for Church of England parish worship. This substantial medieval church has Grade I listed status and is widely called the Cathedral of the Fens, reflecting its notable scale and reputation. It belongs to the Diocese of Ely.
The tower is the earliest surviving part, dating from the thirteenth century. During the fifteenth century, the building was enlarged to a length of about 160 feet and given windows characteristic of Perpendicular Gothic architecture. Several benches also survive from that period. Later fittings include an elaborately carved poor box bearing the date 1639 and a chandelier made in 1701. Restoration undertaken in the Victorian era was mainly confined to the chancel. The church also appeared as Fenchurch St Paul’s parish church in the 1973 television adaptation of Dorothy L. Sayers’s The Nine Tailors.
