About Chapel at Raithby Hall
Chapel at Raithby Hall is a small Methodist place of worship near Spilsby in Lincolnshire. It is Grade I listed and belongs to the Mid-Lincolnshire Methodist Circuit. Regarded as Lincolnshire’s earliest Methodist chapel and among the oldest in England, it remains in use for occasional services. It is also one of a limited number of surviving chapels inaugurated by John Wesley.
Robert Carr Brackenbury, a prosperous Methodist minister who built and occupied Raithby Hall, constructed the chapel in 1779. Built of brick, it occupies an upper level above an older stable. Wesley formally dedicated it on 5 July that year and later preached there on 3 July 1788.
