About Saint Mary and Saint Nicolas

Saint Mary and Saint Nicolas stands on Church Street in Spalding, Lincolnshire. It remains an active parish church in the Church of England and holds Grade I listed status.

The present church was begun around 1284 by Prior William of Littleport, replacing an earlier place of worship near Spalding Priory. His successor, Clement of Hatfield, completed the work. The cruciform building originally had a six-bay aisled nave, two-bay aisled transepts, an unaisled chancel and a bell tower. During the 14th century, parts of the nave and south transept were widened, an additional southern aisle was created, and the porch and tower were built. Fifteenth-century work included taller pillars, clerestory windows, a Perpendicular west window and an angel-decorated hammerbeam roof. Sir George Gilbert Scott directed a substantial restoration from 1865 to 1867, removing later galleries, box pews and a three-level pulpit. Modern additions include stained glass, chancel ceiling decoration and a rebuilt, repositioned organ.
