About Saint Denys'
Saint Denys' is a Church of England parish church on East Gate in Sleaford, Lincolnshire. Dating from around 1180, it continues to serve as an active place of worship and is protected at Grade I for its exceptional architectural significance.
The earliest surviving fabric is found in the tower and spire, begun in the later 12th century and continued into the early 13th century. Its stone broach spire is among England’s oldest examples. The nave, aisles and northern transept were added in the 14th century in the Decorated Gothic style, with particularly elaborate window tracery. Built from Ancaster stone and roofed in lead, the church contains a medieval rood screen, a communion rail possibly designed by Sir Christopher Wren, eight bells cast in 1796, and tombs for members of the Carre family. The northern aisle was reconstructed in 1853, while lightning damage led to extensive rebuilding of the tower and spire in 1884.
