About Saint Mary Magdalene

Saint Mary Magdalene is a Church of England parish church in Bailgate, within Lincoln’s Exchequer area. Dedicated to Mary Magdalene, the companion of Jesus, the church serves as a parish place of worship and is protected as a Grade II listed building.

The site is close to an earlier Anglo-Saxon church recorded in the Domesday Book and thought to lie beneath the present cathedral. Parts of the existing church date from around the end of the twelfth century or beginning of the thirteenth, and it opened in 1317. After Parliamentarian troops caused damage in 1644, the building was reconstructed in 1695. George Frederick Bodley remodelled parts of the interior in 1882, adding an organ case and screen for the chancel. The organ was replaced in 1866 and rebuilt in 1914 and 1945.
