About St. Mary's
St. Mary’s stands on Church Lane in Horncastle, Lincolnshire. Dedicated to Saint Mary, it is an active Church of England parish church and is designated Grade II*. The building has also accommodated a Roman Catholic congregation for Saturday evening Mass.
Construction of the present church began around 1250, although the site may previously have held a Roman place of worship and later a Saxon minster. Its architecture combines Early English elements, including the nave arcade, tower arch and west lancets, with Perpendicular chancel chapels, clerestory and 15th-century windows. Restoration took place around 1660 under the Revd Thomas Gibson, whose work is recorded by a painted metal plaque. Ewan Christian directed substantial alterations from 1859 to 1861, affecting the east window, chancel arch, aisles, porches and vestry. A memorial window commemorates Canon W. H. Milner, who promoted this restoration.
