About Church of St Andrew
The Church of St Andrew is a Church of England parish church in Heckington, Lincolnshire. It remains a place of Anglican worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1967, reflecting its architectural and historic importance.
Work on the present church began around 1307, replacing an earlier building recorded in the 1190s. Richard de Potesgrave, a royal chaplain and rector of Heckington, founded it with oversight from Henry de Beaumont. Built from Ancaster stone in the Decorated Gothic style, it has a cross-shaped layout, an aisled nave with clerestory, transepts and a spire rising to 180 feet. Notable survivals include medieval glass, elaborate window patterns and numerous external carvings of people, animals and mythical or religious figures. Within the chancel are a richly sculpted Easter sepulchre, three clergy seats and Potesgrave’s tomb. Around 500 fragments removed from the west window in 1946 were restored and returned in January 2025.
