About St Martin's Church, Waithe

St Martin’s Church, Waithe, is a redundant Church of England church on Church Lane, in countryside between Grimsby and Louth. This Grade I listed building is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.

The church dates from the 10th century and retains an Anglo-Saxon central tower, with later work from the 11th and 13th centuries. Built of local limestone and ironstone, it has tiled and Welsh slate roofs, a two-bay nave with aisles, a small transept and an apsidal chancel. James Fowler of Louth restored the building for the Haigh family in 1861, introducing Early English Gothic details. Inside are striped brick and stone walls, richly patterned Minton tiles, stained glass by Ward and Hughes and by Powell, a carved font, stone pulpit and pitch-pine pews. The Haigh family mausoleum lies beneath the altar. Major repairs began in 2005 after decay and vandalism had left parts of the church at risk.
