About Saint Medard and Saint Gildard, Little Bytham
Saint Medard and Saint Gildard, Little Bytham is a Church of England church near Grantham in Lincolnshire. Dating from around 1101, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. Its unusual dedication commemorates Medard and Gildard, French saints of the sixth century, and is the only dedication of its kind in the United Kingdom.
Traces of Anglo-Saxon masonry remain at the outer corners of the nave, while Norman features include the north doorway, the tower arch and an elaborately carved priest’s entrance. The south aisle, tower upper stages and spire were added during the thirteenth century. Features from around 1300 include window tracery, piscinas and a carved Green Man capital found during restoration. The pulpit has a stone base dated 1590, bearing a Latin inscription meaning “Pray and prepare”. A First World War Royal Engineers soldier is buried in the churchyard.
