About Saint Mary the Immaculate
Saint Mary the Immaculate serves Grantham’s Roman Catholic community as a parish church. It occupies a corner site where Barrowby Road meets North Parade, on the northern side of the town centre. Still in use for worship, it is recognised for its architectural and historic significance through Grade II listing.
Thomas Tempest purchased the plot in 1830 and funded the project. The foundation was set in place during 1831, and worship began with the celebration of Mass in 1833. Edward James Willson planned the neoclassical church beside the presbytery, which dated from 1829. A curved addition was made at the west end in 1884. Between 1964 and 1965, Gerard Goalen oversaw an expansion towards the north, bringing modern design into the earlier classical building. The work also turned the previous sacristy into a baptistry and shifted the entrance.
