About Saint Mary Magdalene
Saint Mary Magdalene is an active Church of England parish church in Old Somerby, Grantham, Lincolnshire. Situated on the village’s eastern side in the area known as High Somerby, it belongs to the Diocese of Lincoln and is protected at Grade II*.
The church originated in the 12th century, from which its chancel arch survives, and was enlarged during the later Middle Ages with Early English Gothic work. Built from locally sourced limestone rubble, it includes a nave, south aisle, chancel, porch and vestry. The tower was entirely reconstructed during the 18th century, followed by Victorian restoration in 1876. Interior features include stained glass and a 14th-century stone figure of a knight, with his horse represented at his feet. Two memorial tablets remember eight local men who died in the First World War and six who were killed in the Second World War.
