About Bourne Abbey
Bourne Abbey is a Church of England parish church on Church Walk in Bourne, Lincolnshire, dedicated to St Peter and St Paul. Listed at Grade I, it remains a place of worship for the local parish. Its continued use reflects the nave’s long-standing parochial role, which allowed part of the former monastic complex to survive beyond its closure.
Although Bourne had a church before the Norman Conquest, the documented abbey dates from 1138, when Baldwin fitz Gilbert de Clare founded a community for up to fourteen canons. They followed the Rule of St Augustine within the Arrouaisian movement. The monastery was closed in 1536 during Henry VIII’s suppression of smaller religious houses, while the parish continued using the nave. A road predating the Norman period is thought to lie below the point where the nave meets the chancel. Around 1175, the canon Orrm probably composed the Ormulum here, a significant text in the development of written English.
