About St Nicholas' Church, Leicester
St Nicholas' Church, Leicester stands on the western side of the city centre, close to the Jewry Wall and its Roman bath remains. Belonging to the Church of England, it remains an active parish church and has a mainly young congregation. It also serves as the University of Leicester’s official church and is part of the Inclusive Church Network. The building is protected at Grade I.
The church has Anglo-Saxon origins and may once have been the minster used by Leicester’s early bishops. Its surviving nave is thought to date from between the eighth century and 879, though its precise age is uncertain. Roman stone available around the site was probably reused in its construction. The lower parts of the tower and two transept chapels were added during the tenth century. Further work followed after the Norman Conquest and during the twelfth century, with the building reaching its present form through nineteenth-century additions.
