St Mary de Castro stands in Castle Yard, inside Leicester Castle’s former bailey. It serves as a parish church in the Church of England’s Diocese of Leicester and is listed at Grade I. Its name uses the Latin term for ‘of the Castle’, distinguishing it from another nearby medieval church. The tower has remained without its spire since structural problems led to its removal in 2014.
A church was founded on the site in 918, while parts of the present building date from the early twelfth century. It became collegiate by 1107 and retained that role until 1548. Enlargements during the 1160s added the northern aisle, new entrances and a longer chancel, whose Norman sedilia and piscina are particularly notable. Further work in the thirteenth century reshaped the transepts and southern aisle, with its east window added around 1300. George Gilbert Scott extensively restored the interior in the 1860s. The three-manual pipe organ was first installed in 1860.
