About Leicester Cathedral
Leicester Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral in the heart of Leicester and serves as the Bishop of Leicester’s principal church. Dedicated to Martin of Tours, it is among the five medieval places of worship still standing in central Leicester and has Grade II* listed status. It gained collegiate rank in 1922 and became the diocese’s cathedral five years later.
Christian worship on the site predates the Norman church documented in 1086, which succeeded an Anglo-Saxon building amid Roman remains. Much of the cathedral’s current character comes from nineteenth-century work by Raphael Brandon. His additions include the tower, finished in 1862, and a spire rising 220 feet, added in 1867. Its eastern stained glass honours the dead of the First World War. In 2015, Richard III was laid to rest here after archaeologists found his remains beneath the former Greyfriars precinct nearby.
