About Church of St Andrew
The Church of St Andrew in Leicester, Leicestershire, is a Church of England place of worship in the Diocese of Leicester. It follows an Anglo-Catholic tradition and holds Grade II* listed status. Following the 2026 fire, Sunday worship was transferred to the adjoining hall.
George Gilbert Scott designed the Victorian building, which was erected over the period 1860–62. On 28 July 2026, a substantial blaze badly affected its roof, with investigators considering an accidental cause likely. Fire crews brought out the coffin of a churchwarden whose funeral was being arranged, while historic objects from the 1880s were also preserved. Services began again in the hall on the next Sunday. After the incident, Pope Leo XIV wrote from the Vatican to express his support for the congregation.
