About St Helen's
St Helen’s is the Church of England parish church serving Ashby-de-la-Zouch in Leicestershire. It belongs to the Leicester diocese and the deanery covering north-west Leicestershire. The church remains in parish use and is protected at Grade I for its outstanding architectural importance.
A place of worship existed here by the eleventh century, while portions of the present nave and chancel are medieval. William Hastings substantially enlarged and reconstructed the building in 1474, during the development of his nearby castle. Built of sandstone, the church has a western tower and retains fifteenth-century elements including the Hastings Chapel. Alterations around 1670 provided additional room, followed by new seating and galleries in 1829. A major restoration from 1878 to 1880 added two outer aisles, giving the nave its unusual breadth. Notable features include early glass near the east end, Victorian windows illustrating Christ’s life, funerary monuments, carvings by Thomas Earp and a rare finger pillory.
