About St Luke's Church
St Luke’s Church is a Church of England parish church on Manor Lane in Slyne, Lancashire. It remains in active use and belongs to the Diocese of Blackburn, within the Lancaster archdeaconry and Tunstall deanery. The parish shares a benefice with St Saviour’s at Aughton and St Wilfrid’s at Halton. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Designed by the Lancaster architectural practice Austin and Paley, the church was constructed from 1898 to 1900 at a cost of £2,358, with accommodation for 180 worshippers. It initially served as a subsidiary chapel for Holy Trinity, Bolton-le-Sands, before gaining independent parish status in 1934. Sandstone rubble walls, red tile roofing and a timber porch define the exterior. Its layout includes a nave, north aisle, chancel and crossing tower. The tower is topped by a hipped roof and wooden bellcote, while a taller stair turret rises at its south-eastern corner. Inside, a white marble font from 1905 depicts an angel holding a scallop shell.
