About Syro-Malabar Cathedral of St Alphonsa
The Syro-Malabar Cathedral of St Alphonsa is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Preston, Lancashire, close to the city centre and entered from Meadow Street. It is the seat of Great Britain’s Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy, with worship following the Syro-Malabar rite. Formerly known as St Ignatius Church, it has served the Syro-Malabar community since 2015 and became a cathedral in 2016. The building is Grade II* listed.
Founded by the Jesuits, the church was designed in an early Gothic style by Joseph John Scoles. Construction began in 1833, and it opened three years later with Preston’s first church spire. Joseph Hansom enlarged it in 1858, adding five bays, a chancel and side chapels. Further work in 1885–86 included a remodelled chancel, an elevated altar with Hopton Wood stone, new chapels, alabaster figures and carved decoration by Frank Tory. A baptistery and another side chapel followed in 1912.
