About St Wilfrid's Church, Preston
St Wilfrid’s Church, Preston is a Roman Catholic place of worship in central Preston, Lancashire. Standing on Chapel Street, between Fishergate and Winckley Square, it remains under Jesuit care and opens each day during retail hours for prayer and quiet reflection. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Construction began in April 1792 and was completed in 1793, replacing the smaller St Mary’s chapel in Friargate. The original building was a restrained brick structure, positioned alongside the street rather than facing it. Growing attendance later prompted enlargement and a more ornate design. A sodality chapel and confessionals were introduced during alterations completed in 1880, with Jesuit priest and architect Ignatius Scoles involved in the work. Further changes followed around 1890, when the outside received stone facing and carved stone and terracotta details, while European marbles enriched the interior. Restoration took place in 1996. Notable surviving fittings include the high altar and altar rails.
