About St Thomas'
St Thomas' stands on Lancaster Road North in Preston, Lancashire. Formerly an Anglican parish church, it is now home to City Church Preston, part of Assemblies of God Great Britain. The building is listed at Grade II and has been used by other Christian congregations since 2001.
Designed by John Latham, the church was constructed from 1837 to 1839 for £4,500, with space for around 1,100 worshippers. Its sandstone walls, slate roofing and rounded arches are chiefly Romanesque Revival in character. The plan includes a nave of six bays, side aisles, a clerestory and a chancel ending in a polygonal apse. A tower of three stages rises above the chancel and carries a broach spire. Inside, cylindrical columns support the arcades, while an inserted upper storey divides the interior. Few early windows remain, though stained glass dated 1907 portrays Jesus Christ.
