About St Peter's Church

St Peter’s Church is in St Peter’s Square in Preston, Lancashire. Once serving as an Anglican parish church, it is now redundant and has Grade II* protection. Preston Polytechnic acquired the property during 1973, and it later passed to the University of Central Lancashire, where it was used as St Peters Arts Centre.

Thomas Rickman and Henry Hutchinson designed the sandstone church, which was constructed between 1822 and 1825 with funding assistance from the Church Building Commission. Its Decorated Gothic design includes a nave of six bays, side aisles, a raised clerestory and a chancel. Joseph Mitchell designed the southeast steeple, completed in 1851–52 with help from a legacy left by Preston mayor and alderman Thomas German. German is commemorated by a monument in the southern aisle and by lettering among the tower’s patterned floor tiles. Further details include galleries resting on narrow iron supports, battlemented parapets, an ornamented spire and a font dating to 1884.
